Color blindness test plates can contain a single number, several digits, or a recognizable shape hidden among colored dots. This gallery demonstrates six custom plate styles without revealing their answers.

What the Six Sample Plates Demonstrate

Each plate is built from dots of different sizes, positions, and related shades. Some dots create the figure while the rest form the background. Changing the figure format or color relationship produces a noticeably different viewing experience.

Single-Digit Number Plate

A single-digit plate concentrates the figure near the middle of the circle. You can usually take in the entire pattern at once without scanning from one side of the plate to the other.

The short figure does not guarantee an easy plate. Closely related shades and scattered background dots can soften its edges, leaving the number less distinct than its compact size might suggest.

Two-Digit Number Plate

With two digits, there is more information to recognize. One part may stand out immediately while another appears less certain, especially where the figure approaches areas with denser or more varied dots.

This format demonstrates why partial recognition is not the same as identifying the complete figure. In the live test, two-digit answers are entered together through the number field.

Three-Digit Number Plate

A three-digit figure reaches farther toward the sides of the circle. That wider layout asks the viewer to recognize several connected character shapes instead of focusing on one central area.

The outer digits may interact with the surrounding dots differently from the middle digit. This makes longer plates visually distinct from single-digit examples, even when both use a similar color palette.

Geometric Shape Plate

Shape plates replace digits with forms such as a circle, triangle, square, star, diamond, or heart. Curves, corners, and narrow points each create different demands on the dot arrangement.

Instead of typing an answer, the viewer selects the matching shape in the live test. Mixing shapes with number plates keeps the screening varied and avoids relying entirely on reading digits.

Red-Green Color Plate

Red-green plates often use more than obvious red and green. Olive, orange, brown, clay, and muted green shades can create a warmer, earthier appearance while still exploring a red-green color relationship.

The figure and background may have similar brightness, so the hidden pattern cannot be found through a simple light-versus-dark difference. Harder plates typically make the color separation more restrained.

Blue-Yellow Color Plate

Blue-yellow plates may combine cornflower blue or muted blue dots with gold, yellow, ochre, or olive shades. Their cooler blue areas give them a noticeably different appearance from many red-green plates.

This color relationship is screened separately because responses to red-green plates do not predict exactly how blue-yellow patterns will appear. The live test can use either numbers or shapes within both color groups.

Why Dot Sizes, Shades, and Placement Vary

If every dot were identical and arranged in a grid, the figure might become visible from spacing alone. Different dot sizes help fill broad areas and define smaller curves or corners. Related shades stop the plate from looking like a simple two-color graphic, while irregular placement disguises the figure’s boundary. The intended number or shape should emerge from color grouping, not from an obvious outline.

Why do color blindness plates use different dot sizes?
