Add a Watermark to a PDF Online
Solvioza Add Watermark to PDF places custom text or a logo over PDF pages directly in your browser. Type a label such as Confidential, Draft, Approved, or Sample, or choose a PNG or JPG image. Then adjust the font, size, color, opacity, rotation, placement, page selection, and tile spacing while checking the result in a live page preview.
Use a single centered mark, choose one of nine page positions, or drag the watermark to a precise location in the preview. You can also repeat it across each page and apply it to every page, odd pages, even pages, or a custom range. The PDF is processed locally on your device, and the finished watermarked document is ready to download without uploading the source file to a conversion server.
How to Add a Watermark to a PDF
- Choose a PDF: Drag one document into the upload area or select Choose PDF File.
- Select Text or Image: Enter watermark wording or choose a PNG or JPG logo from your device.
- Set the appearance: For text, select a PDF-safe font, color, and size. For an image, adjust its displayed width.
- Adjust transparency: Lower the opacity for a subtle background mark or raise it for a more prominent stamp.
- Rotate the watermark: Use the rotation slider to create a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal mark.
- Choose its location: Pick one of nine positions or drag the watermark within the live preview.
- Repeat it if needed: Enable Tile across each page and adjust the space between repeated marks.
- Select pages: Apply the watermark to all pages, odd pages, even pages, or a custom range such as 1-4, 7, 10-12.
- Review multiple pages: Use the preview arrows to check pages with different layouts and backgrounds.
- Create and download: Choose Add Watermark, review the completion message, and save the watermarked PDF.
Text Watermarks and Image or Logo Watermarks
The best watermark type depends on what the document needs to communicate. Text is quick to create and stays sharp at different zoom levels. An image watermark is useful when a recognizable logo, seal, signature graphic, or branded mark should appear consistently.
Create Draft, Copy, Internal Use, Approved, Copyright, or other status labels. Control the font, point size, color, opacity, angle, and location.
Add a PNG or JPG brand mark, emblem, seal, or graphic. Resize it proportionally, rotate it, make it transparent, and place or tile it across pages.
PNG is usually the better choice for logos with transparent backgrounds and crisp edges. JPG works well for rectangular artwork and photographic marks, but it does not support transparency inside the image itself. The tool's opacity control applies to either format. When the source is a JPG or PNG rather than a PDF, add the mark directly with the Image Watermark tool instead.
Customize Watermark Font, Size, Color, and Opacity
Text controls let you balance visibility with readability. Choose Helvetica for a clean sans-serif look, Times for a traditional serif appearance, or Courier for fixed-width characters. Regular, bold, and italic or oblique variants are available. These PDF-safe fonts are embedded consistently without downloading an external web font.
| Control | What it changes | Practical guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Font | Family, weight, and italic style | Use bold for short status labels and regular weight for longer wording. |
| Text size | Height and overall visual presence | Large diagonal labels suit full-page marks; smaller type works near corners. |
| Color | Watermark text color | Choose a color that stays distinguishable across the document's backgrounds. |
| Opacity | Transparency from faint to solid | Low opacity helps preserve reading comfort; higher opacity emphasizes document status. |
| Rotation | Angle from -180 to 180 degrees | Diagonal angles are common for notices; zero degrees keeps the mark horizontal. |
Choose Nine Positions or Drag the Watermark
The position grid provides top-left, top-center, top-right, middle-left, center, middle-right, bottom-left, bottom-center, and bottom-right placement. Each preset adapts to the dimensions of the current PDF page, including portrait, landscape, and mixed-size documents. If several documents will share one watermark, combine them with PDF Merger first so placement can be reviewed across the complete file.
Select a preset for quick alignment, or press and drag anywhere over the page preview for a custom position.
Dragging changes the relative position, so the watermark appears in the corresponding place on pages with different dimensions. If pages are sideways or in the wrong sequence, correct them with PDF Organizer before choosing final watermark placement.
Tile a Watermark Across Every Page
Tiling repeats the text or logo in rows across the page. It is useful when one corner mark could be cropped away, when a proof must be visibly identified, or when a full-page pattern should discourage reuse of an unapproved document.
Tile spacing is measured in PDF points and updates the preview as it changes. Watermark size and rotation also affect the pattern: large or steeply rotated marks naturally require more room. Because the pattern is generated separately for each original page, coverage adapts to different page sizes.
Watermark All, Odd, Even, or Selected PDF Pages
Not every page needs the same treatment. Apply To controls which physical pages receive the watermark, while the live preview indicates whether the current page is included.
- All pagesAdds the selected watermark to every page in the document.
- Odd pagesApplies it to physical pages 1, 3, 5, and onward.
- Even pagesApplies it to physical pages 2, 4, 6, and onward.
- Custom rangeAccepts individual pages and ranges such as 1-5, 8, 11-14.
Odd and even refer to page positions in the uploaded PDF. A custom range is helpful for leaving a cover clean, marking only an appendix, or applying a stamp to selected exhibits. To create separate documents from those ranges instead, use Split PDF.
Use the Live PDF Watermark Preview
The preview renders a real page from the selected PDF and overlays the current text or image settings. Navigate forward and backward to inspect different backgrounds, orientations, page sizes, and content density. Font style, color, size, image width, opacity, rotation, position, tiling, and tile spacing update as you edit them.
The preview is scaled to fit the workspace, so it is an appearance guide rather than a print-proof measurement. Export uses PDF page coordinates and the original page dimensions. Open the downloaded PDF and perform a final review before distributing, filing, printing, or publishing it.
Add a Confidential, Draft, Sample, or Copyright Mark
A PDF watermark can communicate document status, source, or ownership at a glance. Common labels include Confidential, Draft, For Review, Internal Use Only, Do Not Copy, Sample, Uncontrolled Copy, Approved, Expired, and Copyright. A company logo can reinforce branding on proposals, brochures, training material, client proofs, and downloadable resources.
A visual watermark is not access control, encryption, digital rights management, or a digital signature. Recipients may still edit, crop, print, or extract content with suitable software. Use appropriate permissions, contracts, secure sharing, and document controls when protection requirements go beyond visible identification.
Preserve Original PDF Page Size and Quality
The watermark is added as new PDF content rather than converting entire pages into screenshots. Existing page text, vector graphics, and images are not intentionally rasterized or recompressed. A4, Letter, Legal, portrait, landscape, and mixed page dimensions keep their source size and orientation.
Editing a PDF rewrites document bytes, so file size can change even when page quality is preserved. Cryptographic digital signatures will no longer validate after a watermark is added. Complex forms, scripts, portfolios, layers, annotations, attachments, bookmarks, or accessibility structures can also behave differently after editing; keep the original and verify important features in the downloaded result.
If the completed document is larger than an email or upload limit, inspect it first and then use PDF Compressor. Compression is usually best left until after watermarking and other edits are complete.
Private PDF Watermarking in Your Browser
PDF reading, page preview rendering, watermark placement, and output generation happen locally in your browser. The selected PDF and logo are not uploaded to the Solvioza backend or sent to a third-party conversion service. This browser-based workflow can reduce exposure when working with internal reports, proposals, coursework, contracts, financial records, client proofs, and personal documents. If the document begins as scans or photographs, first arrange them into a PDF with the Images to PDF Converter, then return here to apply one consistent watermark.
Local processing still depends on the security of your device. Avoid sensitive work on a shared computer, save downloads to an appropriate folder, and follow your organization's retention policies. The tool accepts one PDF up to 100 MB; practical performance depends on page count, embedded content, browser memory, and device speed.
Tips for a Clear, Professional PDF Watermark
- Keep wording short: A concise label remains readable when rotated, resized, or repeated.
- Use transparency carefully: Start with a subtle opacity, then check whether the mark is visible on both light and dark pages.
- Protect important content: Keep marks away from signatures, totals, form fields, small print, and essential diagrams.
- Use transparent PNG logos: They usually blend into the page more naturally than graphics with a solid rectangular background.
- Inspect mixed page sizes: Review portrait and landscape pages before exporting a document that contains both.
- Do page edits first: Merge, split, rotate, reorder, or remove pages before applying the final watermark.
- Keep the original: Retain an unwatermarked copy until the output has been opened and fully reviewed.
