View, Edit, and Remove PDF Metadata Online
Solvioza PDF Metadata Editor lets you inspect the information stored inside a PDF, change selected fields, or remove document metadata before sharing the file. It displays the title, author, subject, keywords, creator, producer, creation date, and modification date in one clear view. Processing happens completely in your browser, so the selected PDF and cleaned result stay on your device.
PDF metadata can reveal names, software, dates, project terms, or internal descriptions that are not visible on the pages. Use this free online PDF metadata remover when preparing a résumé, contract, report, portfolio, application, invoice, or public download. You can erase every metadata entry in one action or keep useful details by editing only what should remain.
How to Check and Remove PDF Metadata
- Choose a PDF: Drag one file into the upload area or browse your device. Files can be up to 100 MB.
- Review the details: The tool reads the document and displays its standard metadata fields and page count.
- Choose what to do: Select Remove all metadata for a clean copy, or select Edit fields to update specific values.
- Edit if needed: Change the title, author, subject, keywords, creator, producer, or dates. Leave a field empty to remove it.
- Create the result: Remove all metadata or save the edited metadata while keeping the browser tab open.
- Download and verify: Save the cleaned PDF and inspect it in your usual PDF reader before sharing.
What Information Can a PDF Contain?
Metadata describes a document rather than appearing as ordinary page content. Some PDF readers expose it through Document Properties, while search systems and document-management software may use it for sorting or discovery. A file can carry both a standard document-information dictionary and a separate XMP metadata packet. The remove-all option clears both locations, including custom entries that are not shown as editable fields.
| Field | What it may contain | Why review it |
|---|---|---|
| Title and subject | Document name, topic, case, or project | May disclose internal wording |
| Author | A person, team, or account name | May identify the creator |
| Keywords | Search tags and classification terms | May reveal categories or workflow |
| Creator and producer | Apps used to author and export the PDF | Can expose software or process details |
| Dates | Creation and last-modified timestamps | Can disclose a document timeline |
Remove Everything or Edit Selected Fields
Best when privacy is the priority. It removes standard fields, custom Info entries, and the document-level XMP packet from the new copy.
Best when metadata is useful. Replace outdated details, preserve approved fields, and clear individual values by leaving them empty.
Editing begins from a clean metadata state and writes back only the values shown in the editor. This helps prevent an unlisted custom property or duplicate XMP value from surviving accidentally. Keywords can be entered as a comma-separated list, and date fields use the time zone reported by your device.
Private Browser-Based PDF Cleaning
The PDF metadata viewer and editor runs locally with browser code. Your document is read from device memory, processed on the same device, and offered through a temporary download link. Solvioza does not upload the file to its backend or send it to an external conversion API.
Browser-only processing reduces exposure during conversion, but the downloaded file still needs appropriate storage and sharing controls. If the cleaned document is sensitive, add an open password with Protect PDF after verifying the metadata result.
What Metadata Removal Does Not Remove
Removing document properties does not redact visible text, names, email addresses, signatures, images, annotations, form values, comments, attachments, bookmarks, hidden layers, or information embedded in page artwork. If personal information is printed on a page, it remains visible after the metadata is cleaned.
Page content, dimensions, order, and orientation are kept, but the PDF is rewritten and its file size can change. Rewriting also invalidates an existing cryptographic digital signature. Keep the original signed PDF whenever signature validity matters. To remove complete pages that should not be shared, use PDF Organizer; to separate only the required ranges, use Split PDF.
Useful Times to Clean PDF Properties
- Applications and résumésRemove workstation names, old authors, templates, and timestamps before submission.
- Client and legal documentsReplace internal project labels with approved titles and descriptions.
- Public reportsClear authoring software and revision dates before publishing a final copy.
- Reusable templatesRemove details inherited from the document that originally supplied the layout.
When a document is assembled from several sources, first use PDF Merger to combine the files, then inspect and clean the metadata of the finished PDF. This avoids retaining document-level properties created during an earlier intermediate step.
Compatibility, Limits, and Good Practice
The tool accepts one PDF up to 100 MB. Password-protected or encrypted files must be opened first; if you know the current password, Unlock PDF can create an unencrypted working copy. Practical limits also depend on browser memory, device performance, and document complexity.
- Keep the source: Downloaded output is a new file, and the original on your device is not modified.
- Check more than one viewer: PDF applications sometimes cache properties or show their own filesystem dates.
- Understand date differences: File-created and file-modified dates shown by an operating system are separate from dates stored inside the PDF.
- Verify important features: Test forms, links, attachments, accessibility structure, and other advanced features after any PDF rewrite.
