Add Page Numbers to a PDF Online
Solvioza Add Page Numbers to PDF lets you place clear, consistent page numbers on a PDF directly in your browser. Upload one document, choose a header or footer position, select decimal, Roman numeral, or alphabetic numbering, customize the display format, font, size, color, and margin, and preview the result before downloading the numbered PDF.
The tool can number every page, only odd or even pages, a custom page range, or every page except the first. It is useful for reports, proposals, manuals, ebooks, assignments, legal bundles, scanned records, and any document that needs easier navigation. Processing stays on your device, and the original page size, orientation, text, vector artwork, and image quality are not intentionally changed.
How to Add Page Numbers to a PDF
- Choose one PDF: Drag a document into the upload area or select Choose PDF File.
- Choose a position: Place numbers at the top left, top center, top right, bottom left, bottom center, or bottom right.
- Select a number style: Use decimal numbers, lowercase or uppercase Roman numerals, or lowercase or uppercase letters.
- Choose a display format: Show the value alone, add the word Page, include the final value in the numbering sequence, or combine both.
- Set the starting value: Enter a number, Roman numeral, or letter that matches the selected style.
- Control the appearance: Select a font, font size, text color, and distance from the page edge.
- Choose which pages receive numbers: Apply numbering to all, odd, even, custom, or all except the first page.
- Check the live preview: Move through the document and confirm placement, style, and page eligibility.
- Create and download: Select Add Page Numbers, then save the finished PDF to your device.
Choose a Header or Footer Position
Use top left, center, or right for a page-number header that places the number near the upper edge of the page.
Use bottom left, center, or right for familiar footer pagination in reports, books, and handouts.
Preview different pages before processing so the number does not cover a footer, logo, signature, or page heading.
Left and right positions are aligned to the selected page-edge margin. Center positions remain horizontally centered. Because PDFs may contain mixed dimensions or orientations, inspect both portrait and landscape pages in the preview. If pages need to be rotated or rearranged first, use PDF Organizer before adding the final numbering.
Decimal, Roman Numeral, and Alphabetic Page Numbers
Choose the page-number style that matches the structure and tone of the document. The starting-value field follows the selected style, so a lowercase Roman sequence can begin at iv and an uppercase alphabetic sequence can begin at D.
| Number style | Example sequence | Common use |
|---|---|---|
| Decimal | 1, 2, 3 | Reports, forms, manuals, and general documents |
| Lowercase Roman | i, ii, iii | Introductions, prefaces, and front matter |
| Uppercase Roman | I, II, III | Formal sections, appendices, and outlines |
| Lowercase alphabetic | a, b, c | Supplementary sections and exhibits |
| Uppercase alphabetic | A, B, C | Annexes, schedules, and labeled attachments |
Alphabetic numbering continues after Z as AA, AB, and so on. Roman numerals support standard values from 1 through 3999. Decimal numbering may begin at zero when that convention is required.
Page Number Display Formats
Number style controls the value, while display format controls the surrounding words and total. These settings work together. Selecting lowercase Roman numerals changes Page 1 of 10 into Page i of x, while uppercase alphabetic numbering changes it into Page A of J.
- 1Shows only the styled page value for a clean, compact footer or header.
- Page 1Adds a clear label before each page value.
- 1 of 10Shows the current value alongside the final value in the applied numbering sequence.
- Page 1 of 10Uses the most descriptive format for formal and shared documents.
Apply Numbers to All, Odd, Even, or Selected Pages
The Apply To setting controls which physical PDF pages receive a number. The sequence advances only across eligible pages, and formats containing a total use the final value in that numbering sequence as the denominator. For five selected pages starting at 1, the sequence runs from 1 of 5 through 5 of 5. Starting at 5 produces 5 of 9 through 9 of 9.
- All Pages
- Numbers every physical page.
- Begins with the chosen starting value.
- Odd Pages Only
- Numbers physical pages 1, 3, 5, and onward.
- Useful for one side of a double-sided layout.
- Even Pages Only
- Numbers physical pages 2, 4, 6, and onward.
- Useful for the opposite side of a double-sided layout.
- Custom Range
- Select Custom Range from the Apply To dropdown.
- Enter pages such as 1-5, 8, 10-12.
- The range field appears only when this option is selected.
- Except First Page
- Leaves the cover page without a visible number.
- Starts the numbering sequence on physical page 2.
Odd and even refer to positions in the uploaded PDF, not the visible value printed on a page. If you need separate files for different ranges rather than a single numbered document, use Split PDF.
Customize Font, Size, Color, and Margin
Choose Helvetica for a neutral sans-serif appearance, Times Roman for a traditional editorial look, or Courier for fixed-width characters. Font size is measured in points. A larger size improves visibility, while a smaller size can fit narrow margins and compact layouts.
Text color can match a brand palette or improve contrast against the existing header and footer. The margin determines the number's distance from the selected page edge. Use the live preview to avoid clipping and to keep enough space between pagination and existing artwork.
Live PDF Page Number Preview
The live preview renders the selected PDF page and places a visual representation of the current number over it. Use the previous and next controls to inspect pages throughout the document. Pages excluded by Apply To display no number, making odd, even, custom, and except-first-page settings easier to verify.
The preview is scaled to fit the workspace, so it is an appearance guide rather than an exact measurement of the generated output. The generated PDF uses the selected point size and margin against each original PDF page. Always open the downloaded file for a final check before printing, publishing, or submitting it.
Preserve Original PDF Quality and Page Dimensions
Page numbers are added as new text content without turning complete pages into screenshots. Existing text, vector graphics, and images are not intentionally recompressed. A4, Letter, Legal, portrait, landscape, and mixed-size pages keep their source dimensions and orientation.
Adding content rewrites the PDF file, so its byte size can change. Document-level features such as cryptographic signatures, complex forms, scripts, portfolios, attachments, bookmarks, and accessibility structures may be affected by PDF editing. A digital signature will no longer validate after the document changes. Keep the signed original whenever signature validity matters.
If the finished PDF is too large for email or an upload form, review it first and then use PDF Compressor. Compression should generally be the final step because later edits can change the file again.
Private, Browser-Based PDF Numbering
PDF reading, preview rendering, number placement, and output creation happen locally in your browser. Your document is not uploaded to the Solvioza backend or sent to a third-party conversion service. Local processing reduces exposure of private reports, contracts, financial documents, academic work, and internal records.
Your device still matters: avoid processing confidential documents on a shared computer, save the download to an appropriate location, and clear files according to your organization's policies. The tool accepts one PDF up to 100 MB, while practical performance depends on page count, document complexity, browser memory, and device speed.
Finish Page Edits Before Numbering
Add page numbers after the document has reached its final reading order. If several files belong in one report, combine them with PDF Merger before choosing a numbering sequence. When a document contains misplaced, sideways, blank, or unwanted pages, correct those issues first in PDF Organizer. This prevents later page edits from breaking otherwise correct pagination.
Working from scanned pages or photographs? Turn the source images into a single document with the Images to PDF Converter, check their order, and then return here to number the finished PDF.
Tips for Reliable PDF Pagination
- Finalize page order first: Merging, deleting, or rearranging pages after numbering can make the sequence incorrect.
- Keep cover pages clean: Choose Except First Page when a title page should not display pagination.
- Match established conventions: Use Roman numerals for front matter and decimal numbers for the main body where appropriate.
- Check contrast: Select a text color that remains readable against every page background.
- Allow safe margins: Keep numbers away from trim edges when the document will be printed.
- Review excluded pages: Navigate through the preview to confirm odd, even, and custom page selection.
- Keep the source: Retain the original until the downloaded numbered PDF has been reviewed.
